What Do Students Send In Space?

We have found that students choose a variety of unusual subjects for these passive experiments. NASA has simple guidelines for us to follow. We cannot send living animals, however the state of suspended animation of dehydrated water bears make them acceptable subjects. Brine shrimp eggs (Sea Monkeys) are also allowed and are popular. Seeds of all types have been flown. Most schools involved in the project have Space Trees which were grown from seeds sent in passive experiments. Otherwise, we have to make sure that NASA has the exact ingredients of each vial. Nothing that is toxic, or combustible can be flown. We are very cautious to inspect each vial so that the safety requirement will not cause our payload to be rejected. The makers of GAK and SMUD did not understand why they had to talk to NASA about their "secret ingredients."
