| Bachelor of Health Sciences Course Descriptions BHS-315. Educational Psychology in Health Education. This course introduces the elements of human development, learning theory, learning styles and cognitive development. It also emphasizes motivation and evaluation of student achievement in the health professions. 3 s.h. BHS-372. Professional Writing and Editing. This course is designed to improve students ability to communicate effectively in writing, particularly related to their technical and leadership responsibilities as a health professional. The writing process, writing style, organization, and clarity of communication are major emphases in the course. The content is applicable to writing projects such as correspondence, resumes, instructions, abstracts, news releases, patient education materials, reports, articles, and proposals. 3 s.h. BHS 380. Human Resource Management. This course will introduce students to the various personnel functions in health services organizations, including recruitment, selection, job analysis, performance appraisal, compensation/benefits, employee health, grievance, discipline, discharge, and organizational development. In addition, students will gain an understanding of current social, behavioral, legal, and ethical issues from a human resources planning and management perspective. 3.s.h. BHS 382. Budgeting, Finance, and Healthcare Payment Systems. Students will study accounting and financial management principles and their application to operational problems in health care. In addition, students will study budgeting and gain skills in developing budgets in different healthcare units. Students will gain competence in the techniques of forecasting financial results for individual projects and the organization. In addition, major reimbursement systems will be covered, such as Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party payment systems. 3.s.h BHS-403. Health Care and Society. This course is an investigation of the systems currently used to deliver health care in the United States. Emphasis is on the effect social, economic, demographic, ethnic, and environmental factors have on the delivery of, and access to, health care in the United States. 3 s.h. BHS-404. Health Care Delivery Systems. This course approaches health care as an industry. Topics include the hospital; multi-hospital systems; health care manpower; financing health services; private health insurance and employee benefits; managed care; influencing, regulating, and monitoring the health care system. National health policy, the politics of health care, future trends in health care are also discussed. Prerequisite/ or permission of instructor: BHS 348, Health Care and Society. 3 s.h. BHS-447. Biomedical Ethics. Faculty will present pertinent selections from literature, ethics, values, and philosophy as related to the delivery of patient care This is in conjunction with a study of law as applied to the allied health field, with particular reference to liability, recording, confidentiality, and the release of information. 3 s.h. BHS-449. Leadership and Organizational Change. This course is designed to prepare students to assume leadership roles in a changing health care environment. It examines the change process and the impact of leadership, organizational structure, and organizational culture on change. Through assessments and interative experiences, students gain insight into their own leadership and change management skills. They also design leadership development and change managment plans. 3 s.h. BHS-455. Managing Health Information. An introduction to health information management from the perspective of control and management of information resources. It includes strategic information systems planning, integration and maintenance of organizational information technologies and coordination of policies and procedure for technology acquisition implementation and operation. This course is also designed to develop skills in problem identification, assessment of needs, and evaluation of objectives. Emphasis is on collection, organization, and interpretation of information as needed for the design, planning, and evaluation of health care programs. Students develop a proposal incorporating principles of planning and evaluation. 3 s.h. BHS-456. Health Data Analysis. This course is a continuation of BHS-455, Managing Health Information. It is designed to give students experience in analyzing and completing health information projects; data design and collection; clinical performance measurement; data presentation; and reading and understanding professional, statistical publications. Qualitative and quantitative data analysis and inferential analysis are included in class activities. Prerequisite: BHS-455, Managing Health Information. 3 s.h. BHS-465. The Health Professional as Educator. This course introduces models of learning and methodologies relevant to the health professions, including patient, community, and staff education. The course also covers use of instructional multimedia in health-related teaching situations. 3 s.h. BHS-470. Professional Seminar. Using a seminar approach with interactive and reflective activities, entering students become oriented to the academic program and consider its role in their career development. They discuss learning styles and characteristics of adult learners. Students also focus on academic skills assessment and strategies, explore the value of the liberal arts, and develop an academic plan of study which integrates personal and professional goals and serves as the guide to completing their degree program. 3 s.h. BHS-472. Senior Practicum Preparation. A sequence of faculty guided developmental activities resulting in the formulation of a strategic plan and learning contract to be used to complete Senior Practicum. Students build upon previously completed self-assessments and personal and professional goals to identify and justify a proposal for Senior Practicum. 1 s.h. BHS-478. Senior Practicum. This capstone course provides a synthesis of competency and skills developed or nurtured in the formal and informal curriculum. The student will engage in the learning activities specified in the approved learning contract developed during Senior Practicum Preparation and measure and validate the outcomes of these learning activities. Prerequisite: BHS-472, Senior Practicum Preparation. 3 s.h.
