Year-end Annual Leave Cutback

Broadcast date: 2009-11-18

Current leave records indicate that many classified and research grant employees will exceed the authorized maximum accrued annual leave accumulation on December 31 unless leave is used between now and the end of the year.

In accordance with State regulations, annual leave balances for classified, unclassified non-faculty and research grant employees will be automatically reduced to 360 hours (45 days) effective January 1, 2010. This is the authorized maximum accrued annual leave accumulation that may be carried over into a new calendar year.

Employees who believe they will exceed the authorized maximum will need to work with their supervisors to schedule leave before the end of the 2009 calendar year.

Annual leave taken by biweekly and monthly employees through December 31 will be deducted prior to the annual leave cutback, provided supervisors record all calendar year 2009 leave taken in Kronos prior to January 5, 2010.

Supervisors and employees are encouraged to monitor annual leave balances throughout the entire calendar year to avoid end-of-the-year requests, which may be difficult to accommodate.

Please call extension 2-7225 if you have any questions concerning annual leave balances, reporting of leave or calendar year leave cutback.

Leave Transfer Pool Donations

Broadcast date: 2009-11-18

The Employee Leave Transfer Program, which began in January, 1989, allows employees occupying FTE positions who wish to donate leave to the annual and/or sick leave transfer pools to do so before December 31 of each calendar year. Employees who may lose annual and/or sick leave because they will exceed the authorized maximum leave carryover of 360 hours for annual leave and 1,440 hours for sick leave are encouraged to donate leave to the transfer pools before this date.

The donated leave is used by eligible employees who experience a medical or family emergency that requires the employee's absence from work for a prolonged period of time and would otherwise result in a substantial loss of income.

Employees who wish to donate leave are reminded that no more than one-half of the annual or sick leave accrued during the calendar year may be donated. Faculty may donate sick leave only. Once leave has been transferred, it cannot be restored or returned to the leave donor. To donate leave, employees must complete a Leave Donation Form. This form can be accessed from the MUSC Homepage, Human Resources, University Human Resources, Forms web site, or http://www.musc.edu/hrm/forms/Leave%20Donation%20Form.doc.

Any questions regarding this program should be directed to the Human Resources Management Classification/Compensation Section at extension 2-4428.
