Academic/Faculty: Press Release - Breaking a Research Record

Broadcast date: 2008-08-07

Colleagues -

I am writing to convey great news to the MUSC community.

As you know, the research programs at MUSC have undergone tremendous growth
over the last 10 years.

For FY08 ending June 30th 2008, our records indicate that we have achieved
a new MUSC record for extramural research funding.

We have topped the $200M mark for total research funding and have topped the $100M mark for funding from the National Institutes of Health! (See attached Press Release that will go out later today)

Total extramural funding increased from $193M in FY07 to $202M for FY08.
NIH funding increased from $93M in FY07 to $101M in FY08.

This is a significant and remarkable achievement!

I believe that the sustained increase in NIH funding over the last three years is particularly noteworthy as it occurs in the face of a flat or declining federal budget for research and is a real solid indicator of the quality of our programs.

We will recognize these achievements this fall with a big "100-200"
campus-wide celebration and you will hear more about this soon.

These achievements reflect the sustained effort of so many different
components of our operation from the talented faculty to fellows to
students, MUSC leadership, state support (i.e. Research Infrastructure
Act, CoEE program), increasing program connectivity across the region and the many dedicated people in our research support units and the colleges.

This is a tremendous accomplishment and it is a great pleasure for me to
have a chance to be associated with such a superb program.

Stephen M. Lanier, Ph.D.
Professor of Pharmacology
Associate Provost for Research
