Facilities
Dr. Wen's laboratory is located in the 6th floor of the new Children's Research Institute Building on Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Campus at Charleston, SC. (Important notes: Dr. Wen is a Clemson University faculty, but physically located at MUSC campus to establish the strong collaboration in bioengineering research between Clemson and MUSC. http://www.ces.clemson.edu/bio/) The laboratory covers a space of approximately 1000 sq. ft, equipped to perform polymer synthesis, polymer processing, scaffold fabrication, drug release study, cell and tissue culture, animal surgery, molecular biology, histology, and immunohistochemistry research.
Tissue dissection and cell culture room is equipped with a Labconco dissection laminar flow hood/clean bench, two Labconco Biosafety Class II cell culture laminar flow hoods, two Fisher Isotemp water jacketed incubators, one Thermo Forma water jacketed incubator, an Eppendorf 5810R refrigerated centrifuge, a Nikon TE2000 inverted microscope with fluorescence, phase, DIC, CCD camera, and computer, an Olympus Dual-view stereo-microscope for tissue dissection and the assembly of devices, two Precision Model 25 shaking water baths, and multiple computer-controlled dynamic force bioreactors.
Animal surgery module is equipped with a Zeiss surgical microscope with a CCD camera and a computer for video capturing, a stereotaxic frame for rodent animal surgery.
Molecular biology and histology/ immunochemistry Module is equipped with two chemical fume hoods, an Eppendorf ultracentrifuge, a Thermo GPC/HPLC/IC triple system, an Amaxa Nucleofector, a complete set of gel electrophorosis, a fisher slide warmer, a fisher mounting water bath, a Leica cryostat, a Leica rotary microtome, a EMS OTS-3000 virbrotone, two precision gravity convection ovens, a National vacuum oven, a whole set of embedding and staining apparatus, two freezers, and a walk-in cold room.
Polymer synthesis and processing module equipped with a chemical fume hood, a Buchi Rotary Evaporator, a laser microfabrication system, a hollow fiber fabrication system, a Randcastle RC-0250 microextruder for filament fabrication, an electrospinning facility, and an Emerald UV spot cure system.
