Raymond Greenberg, MD, PhD
President, Medical University of South Carolina
Ray Greenberg became President of the Medical University of South Carolina in January of 2000. One of his immediate challenges was to restore fiscal health to the university’s hospital. This was achieved through a combination of organizational restructuring and operational improvements, which then allowed the university to undertake a progressive replacement of its aging hospital facilities. The first phase, to be completed by mid-2007, is a 650,000 square foot state-of-the-art center for the diagnosis and treatment of heart, vascular and digestive diseases. Elsewhere on campus, separate new educational facilities were constructed for the Colleges of Health Professions and Dental Medicine, and five new research buildings have been developed for children’s health, cancer, drug discovery and development, bioengineering, and clinical research.
President Greenberg has placed a strong emphasis on statewide outreach and collaboration. The university has partnered with Clemson University in a Bioengineering Alliance, and with the University of South Carolina in an integration of the state’s two pharmacy schools. Most significantly, the state’s three research universities and four largest teaching hospitals have joined together in the formation of Health Sciences South Carolina – an unprecedented collaboration to improve health, advance medical research, and stimulate economic development.
Prior to coming to Charleston, Dr. Greenberg served on the medical school faculty at Emory University and was the founding dean of the Rollins School of Public Health there. He arrived at the Medical University in 1995 as the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. He holds a medical degree from Duke University, a master’s degree from Harvard, and bachelors and doctoral degrees from the University of North Carolina. Nationally recognized for his research on cancer, Dr. Greenberg has served on many scientific advisory boards and holds two honorary doctorates.
