The program was founded by Dr. Bill Stillway and Ms. Karen Shelton in 1998. At the present time, the major dances are styles associated with tango, including salòn tango, milonga, milonguero and vals.
DANCE.MUSC is a dance community that embraces the health and social benefits of dance. We offer these dances free of charge, but this is not intended to infer that the lessons and dances are of a lesser quality than as those for which people must pay. On the contrary, it is free for the love of dance and in order to avoid the many pitfalls that money often creates. No one is limited by financial ability. Instruction is by experienced dancers who have studied under many dance masters. The instructors love dance, have improvised and perfected new dance routines and wish to share dance knowledge and skills. In our dance community, we strive to teach others how to instruct dance, which offers them the joy of watching others learn and develop in the world of dance.
People have danced through the millenia for the pure joy of it. All dances evolved from "folk" dancing, which has been enjoyed by peoples of the world at no cost and often at the spur of the moment in almost any social gathering. Dance brings people closer together and allows them to express inner feelings that cannot be communicated in any other way. Unfortunately, in these times, we have attempted to formalize dancing beyond people's natural abilities. While we at DANCE.MUSC follow rules of dance, they are loosely followed so as to allow for freedom of expression.

The Harper Student Center as seen from Courtenay Street., Charleston, SC
From Interstate 26 or Mt. Pleasant-Take 17S. Take the old Cooper River bridge to Charleston. You will travel over an overpass at the bottom of the bridge, get in the right-hand lane, but do not exit to I26. As you travel West through Charleston, make sure you are in the left lane. If you look to your left, you will see a rainbow painted on the side of a house. This means you are close. Stay in the left lane and continue around a curve to the right and get ready to turn left onto Courtenay (at Hardees). If you miss this turn, turn left into the Hardee parking lot and get on Courtney. Pix
The student center will be on the right (one block) on the corner of Courtenay and Bee (See above.). After 5:00 you may park under the building or outside.
Studio A is located on the ground floor. The Main Aerobic Studio is on the second floor. Pix
From West of the Ashley or points south-Head north on highway 17, cross the Ashley River, and turn right onto Courtenay (at the helicopter pad). Pix
