1) Add 5 g of octyl-b-D-glucopyranoside (Calbiochem #494459) to 20 ml of acetone and heat at 40° C to dissolve b-OG
2) Filter solution through a scintered glass funnel
3) Slowly add 100 ml of diethyl ether to the filtered solution and reheat if precipitation appears in the solution
4) Place at -20° C overnight to allow crystals to form
5) Pour solution containing crystals through scintered glass funnel
6) Wash crystals with 500 ml of ice-cold diethyl ether
7) Recover crystals from funnel and allow to air dry at -20° C
8) Store crystals at -20° C
1) Aliquot 0.97 ml of 20 mg/ml L-a-dioleoylphoshatidylglycerol (DOPG sodium salt, Avanti #840475) into screw top glass tubes
2) Dry DOPG under N2 as a thin film around the bottom of the tube
3) Make a 7.5% solution of b-OG in water and add 1 ml to each tube containing the dried DOPG
4) Sonicate until DOPG is completely dissolved (4 min bursts with 5 min rest in between)
NOTE: Sonication is not necessary if b-OG solution is allowed to set in tubes with DOPG overnight at 40° C followed by vortexing.
