Interests and Biographical Sketch

I have been a member of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology for 37 years and served as Course Director of the "Molecular Basis of Medicine" course for 27 years, reflecting my life-long committment to medical education. This course continues to evolve and in my role as current Senior Co-Director, it now includes traditional lectures, small group activities, self-directed learning, problem-based learning and research and publication opportunities. My emphasis in the course content includes current understanding and recent advances in human metabolism and its role in disease and health. My major teaching philosphy is to teach from the current scientific literature, rather than the use of dated textbooks and to spark interest and develop the skills for the discovery and application of the basic foundations of medicine as a life-long endeavor. Hand-in-hand with student education, I support faculty develepment of teaching skills.  Toward this goal, I founded the MUSC Apple Tree Society, a faculty-owned program that fosters faculty development in teaching. I also founded the peer-reviewed on-line journal, the South Carolina Journal of Molecular Medicine, where students and others can publish. My laboratory research interests have involved identification of unusual lipids in marine organisms, isolation of shrimp flavoring components and chemattractants, the discovery of two new polyamine species that are based on 1,3-diaminopropane, and work on the metabolism of branched-chain amino acids, particularly the conversion of leucine to cholesterol. Publications from this work are not listed here, given my current focus on the advancement of medical education and are available using resources, such as PubMed. Extramural participation in the community has included faculty responsibilities in the Governor's School for gifted high school students in the College of Charleston's Biomedical Science curriculum from 1998 to 2001. I am gratified that many of these Governor's School students have entered MUSC programs. The contribution of basic sciences to medical education and treatment advances continue to grow. As a dedicated educator, I continue to strive to mirror and model this development for fellow faculty and our students, the future leaders of medicine in the world.
